Former Portadown midfielder Paul Doolin has been appointed as the club's caretaker manager.

The 58-year-old Dubliner will be in charge until the end of the season.

He previously managed teams including Drogheda United and took the Republic's under-19s to the semi-finals of the 2011 European Championships.

His last club was Athlone Town.

Doolin takes over after the weekend departure of Matthew Tipton.

The Ports have struggled this season and dropped into the relegation zone.

A 3-1 defeat at Dungannon on Saturday left them second from bottom, seven points adrift of 10th-placed Carrick Rangers.

They also recently lost star striker and skipper Lee Bonis, who made a big-money move to full-time football with Larne.

Within hours of Tipton leaving, the Shamrock Park club advertised for a new boss.

A brief social media post said: "Portadown Football Club are inviting expressions of interest for the position of first team manager. Please e-mail directors@portadownfc.com"

They've wasted no time putting the new man in place.

There's a full set of fixtures in the Danske Bank Premiership on Tuesday night.

The pick of the games sees leaders Linfield take a trip to third-placed Cliftonville.

Glentoran, currently second, face Coleraine at the BetMcLean Oval.

Portadown have their first match under Doolin at home to Crusaders.

Ballymena go to Carrick, Glenavon host Dungannon and Warrenpoint welcome Larne.
