WATCH: Firefighters extinguish Belfast Harbour Estate blaze

Firefighters have managed to extinguish the flames that have engulfed a scrap metal recycling plant since yesterday afternoon.

Crews arrived at the scene on East Twin Road, in the Belfast Harbour Estate shortly after 1pm yesterday.

In a statement overnight Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Assistant Chief Fire & Rescue Officer Aidan Jennings said:

"Currently over 50 firefighters, 6 appliances and additional specialist appliances, which include a specialist command unit, aerial high reach appliances and high volume pumps have been deployed. Two fire tugs have also been deployed to support firefighting operations. Firefighters have prevented fire spread to on site buildings, equipment and to a neighbouring site. 

"Residents are being asked to keep windows closed. This will be protracted incident and it is expected that firefighting operations will be ongoing over the next few days."

Q Radio News was granted acess to the site this afternoon - as firefighters dampened the final hot spots on the sites.

Firefighters battling the blaze at the scrap metal recycling plant in the Belfast Harbour Estate have managed to put out the flames after working around-the-clock since yesterday afternoon.

It is expected that the FIre Service will remain on the scene overnight to make the area safe.
